Mathematics
Discover how the Mathematics department builds students' love for the subject through hands-on learning, real-world activities, and competitions.
Aims and approach:
The Mathematics Department brings our motto, "Live Maths, Love Maths" to life through engaging experiences that connect mathematics to everyday life. Our curriculum emphasises problem-solving, reasoning, and application across algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. Through collaborative exploration and real-world tasks, students develop 21st Century Competencies, becoming confident, self-directed learners who think critically, communicate effectively, and apply mathematical reasoning to navigate an ever-changing world.
Teaching and learning approaches in Mathematics
Our teaching and learning approach incorporates multiple facets to engage and develop students holistically in maths:
Concept Mastery through Hands-on Learning: Students learn concepts by using manipulatives, engaging in peer collaborations, and participating in mathematical discourse.
Structured Problem-Solving: Students develop process skills and employ Polya’s four-step method to systematically solve problems.
Growth Mindset and Appreciation: We emphasise building a positive attitude, self-confidence, and genuine appreciation for mathematics.
Through these efforts, we aim to create a learning environment where students not only understand mathematics deeply but also feel empowered and inspired by it.
Highlights and achievements:
Our students participated in various Mathematics competitions throughout the year, providing opportunities to explore different problem-solving approaches and develop mathematical reasoning, logical thinking, and creativity.
