Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (Certificate of Accomplishment)
Our modern dancers participated in the SYF Arts Presentation with a contemporary piece ‘Daily Commute’.
“Daily Commute” is a dynamic and evocative dance performance that explores the routine yet deeply personal journey of daily travel. Through movement, the piece captures the often-overlooked emotions and experiences that unfold during a typical commute, whether by foot, car, train, or bus. The performance begins with a sense of hurried disconnection, as dancers move through crowded spaces, mimicking the rush and stress of getting to work or school.
As the piece unfolds, the choreography shifts to reflect moments of quiet introspection, interactions with fellow commuters, and fleeting connections made through eye contact or shared space. The dancers use fluid, intricate movements to convey the monotony of the daily routine while also highlighting the subtle moments of beauty and reflection that occur along the way.
“Daily Commute” delves into themes of isolation, connection, time, and the human spirit’s resilience as it navigates the complexities of modern life. The performance invites the audience to reconsider the mundane and find meaning in the rhythm and rituals of our everyday journeys.
Riverside Modern Dance was proudly presented with a Certificate of Accomplishment for their outstanding performance.
One of my most significant learning experiences was leading the Teachers' Day performance preparation. This demanded self-reliance; my vice chairperson and I assumed full ownership, organising warm-ups and leading practices without the instructor's guidance. We faced two challenges: a messy formation and a critical audio error during the rehearsal. I realised effective leadership meant not just knowing the steps, but also structuring the team effectively, so we rigorously cleaned up the formation. With the audio, we showed resilience by immediately engaging the AV crew to collaboratively resolve the issue. Overall, this project solidified my ability to be proactive and self-reliant under pressure.— Nanthana Thirunavukkarasu
