Aims:

Environmental Science Club aims to:

1. Cultivate in students a love for nature which translates into actionable steps to reduce mankind’s impact on the environment; and

2. Nurture environmental champions through experiential and authentic learning grounded in the scientific method.

2025 Key Events and Achievements

In 2025, members of the Environmental Science Club proudly represented Riverside Secondary School at the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors Award, where they showcased innovative solutions to real-world environmental challenges. Alec Leong and Lisa Wan received the Commendation Award for their invention — the Germination Optimisation System, a low-cost, water-efficient, and self-sustaining device that promotes plant growth without electricity while conserving water.

To commemorate Earth Day, club members shared with schoolmates information about sustainable energy sources in Singapore. They emphasised how simple daily choices can reduce energy consumption — even proposing creative, electricity-free alternatives to mobile gaming! The celebration concluded with students enjoying traditional unplugged games, reinforcing the message that sustainability can begin with small, mindful lifestyle changes.

Another highlight of the year was a collaboration with Republic Polytechnic, where students participated in workshops exploring Singapore’s renewable energy landscape. They delved into the importance of solar energy and its integration into the intentional design of green buildings.

Learning also extended beyond the classroom through enriching learning journeys. During a visit to the Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub, students discovered how Singapore’s transport systems are designed to support sustainability and inclusivity. They also learned about the nation’s “car-lite” vision, understanding how public transport plays a vital role in reducing carbon emissions and protecting the planet.

Through these experiences, the Environmental Science Club continues to inspire students to think critically, act responsibly, and champion sustainable living — paving the way for a greener tomorrow.
